چکیده
Depression is a serious mental disorder manifested by depressed mood, pessimistic thoughts, feelings of worthlessness, feelings of guilt, tearfulness, reduced or increased sleep, appetite loss or appetite disturbance, weight loss or weight gain, social restlessness, loss of interest, difficulty concentrating. Mania is characterized by abnormally elevated or irritable mood, arousal, and/or energy levels. Bipolar disorder features intermittent episodes of ma‐ nia or hypomania and depressive episodes; rapid cycling, mixed states, and psychotic symp‐ toms occuring in some cases. Depression and mania are thought to be heterogeneous illnesses that can result from dysfunction of several neurotransmitters or metabolic systems.

Common aspects of neuroplasticity, stress, mood disorders and mitochondrial functions
Neuroplasticity is a fundamental mechanism of neuronal adaptation to external and internal stimuli. There are evidences that chronic stress and mood disorders disrupt neuroplasticity, while antidepressant treatment can enhance neuroplasticity. Mitochondria strongly affect many intracellular processes coupled to plasticity and neuron survival. Mitochondrial dysfunctions are assuming an increasin...

Abstract Background: Conversion disorder is a type of disturbance in physical functions that does not conform to anatomical and physiological functions of central or peripheral nervous system. Being more common among adolescents, this disorder occurs following stress and results in disturbed organic functioning. Despite the high prevalence of its classic picture, this disorder also creates v...

OBJECTIVE Mitochondrial dysfunctions, impaired bioenergetics and dysfunction of neurotrophins are included in many neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. We investigated in vitro effects of pharmacologically different antidepressants and mood stabilizers on mitochondrial enzymes to discover, which mitochondrial functions could be involved in pathophysiology of mood disorders. METHODS In ...

متن کاملMitochondrial Dysfunction in Depression
BACKGROUND Depression is the most debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder with significant impact on socio-occupational and well being of individual. The exact pathophysiology of depression is still enigmatic though various theories have been put forwarded. There are evidences showing that mitochondrial dysfunction in various brain regions is associated with depression. Recent findings have spar...
متن کاملWhat Can Mitochondrial DNA Analysis Tell Us About Mood Disorders?
Variants in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins in bipolar disorder, depression, or other psychiatric disorders have been studied for decades, since mitochondrial dysfunction was first suggested in the brains of patients with these diseases. Candidate gene association studies initially resulted in findings compatible with the mitochondrial dysfunction hyp...
